Most back-to-school “coupon stacking” advice reads like a fantasy — screenshots of a $180 cart dropping to $12, five coupons deep. That’s not how retail checkout systems work. A real stack is four layers deep: the sale price, one store offer, a payment-method discount, and cashback. Get those four right, in that order, and a $400 dorm haul realistically lands somewhere around $270. That’s the honest number, and it’s still worth doing.
Here’s how the layers actually work, and three stacks that hold up at the register.
Think in layers, not in coupons
The reason most stacking advice fails is that it counts coupons instead of categories. Retail point-of-sale systems don’t care how many codes you have; they care what type each one is. Almost every system allows roughly one discount per type:
- The price layer. Sale, clearance, or an event price like a members-only deal week. You don’t control this — you time around it.
